World-leading global economist Mark Blyth is our special guest for a four-part series this month. Blyth, who predicted Trump, Brexit, and Biden is also a professor of international economics at Brown University.

In this episode, Blyth explains his analogy of world nations as automakers, and with each car comes its own set of attributes for hitting the road. While America, unable to press the breaks on its accelerating economy, represents the Mustang, Europe is the solid Volvo.

“China – command and control – the army truck. You have two and a half million people in a political party who are authorized by the government to go out and shout at people to make sure they’re not coming out at night. And if you do break the rules there are serious consequences. That’s a very different model than we can get together in the west.”

Blyth also explores equality in the pandemic and tackling the economic repercussions of the restrictions that we impose now. “It’s a double whammy, he explains. “If you’re not good at doing the lockdowns, social distancing and the control — not only do you grow back later, but you grow back more unequal. And only those with all the money and the control are poised to grow.

“This creates even more inequality and even more domestic unrest. Ground zero for this is…?”
