“For every misaligned expectation in a job, there’s a recruiter sitting in their inbox waiting for them to have that moment of ‘Yesterday I wasn’t ready for a conversation. Today I am.’” Adam Hickman Ph.D., VP Organizational and Cast Development Talent Strategies at Partners Federal Credit Union – A Walt Disney Company, reflects on the cost to businesses of failing to develop talent within their own talent pool.
The million-dollar question is, how do you get it right?
In this practical leadership webinar, Hickman, AWS’ George Parrilla and Aptitude Chief Analyst Madeline Laurano share how you can consider breaking down the task into four key pillars.
What are the key metrics that matter? And how can you measure that ROI for your CEO and executive board?
The cost of a bad hire
Even before you get to developing your talent pool, drawing the right people into your teams is imperative. This is where People ROI comes in, says George Parilla. “How do we measure training success? You can measure it based on what your team has developed.” Parilla details the tangible benefits of having advanced digital workers.
He adds: “Conversely, the cost of not upskilling means slower digital transformation, and reduced productivity, plus slower operations…This all means lower employee satisfaction.”
What is a skills-based approach?
Once you have hired to fill out your teams for growth, what then is your approach to internal mobility?
“Yes, we can give people opportunities and we can promote jobs internally. But if we’re not invested in a skills-based approach, employees themselves are not going to be happy with that whole process. They’re going to look elsewhere.” Says Madeline Laurano.
Her advice is to be proactive from an operational perspective, which she details. “This isn’t just a flippant thing that you can come up with one month to the next. You’ve got to have a strategy,” agrees Adam Hickman. “And then you’ve also got to make a business case and tell that story to your employees.”
For AWS’ George Parilla, that story can be outlined in four core metrics that he and AWS focus on.
