When Facebook launched in 2007, their mission was “to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected.” In the fifteen years since their launch, the company has transformed into Meta.
The metaverse is “a new phase of interconnected virtual experiences using technologies like virtual [reality] and augmented reality,” according to Facebook. This virtual reality would allow users to feel the same experience of truly being somewhere else using 3D features, spatial sound, etc.
According to founder, chairman, and CEO of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg, says this will transform the internet from something that people can use to something that “we are a part of, or that we can be inside of.”
New company values
In light of Facebook’s transformation into Meta, on 15 February Zuckerberg announced an update to the company’s core values from 2007.
In 2007, the core values included ‘Focus on impact’, ‘Move Fast’, ‘Be Bold’, ‘Be Open’, and ‘Build Social Value’. The description of each value communicates the belief that taking risks was the most important aspect in becoming great.
Zuckerberg urged his employees to work more efficiently and faster than companies that have fallen behind, suggesting that they “move fast and break things.” Ultimately, he was unafraid to make a ripple in order to make an impact
On 15 February, Zuckerberg shared the email he forwarded to his employees on his personal Facebook page for the public. Two values that have not changed are ‘Move Fast’ and ‘Focus on Impact’, yet he now urges his employees to ‘Focus on Long-Term Impact’ and ‘Live in the Future’. This transition emphasized Meta’s goal to consistently remain ahead of the curve.
One of Meta’s core values is ‘Meta, Metamates, Me’ which “is about being good stewards for our company and mission”.
Therefore, it seems that Zuckerberg encourages employees to think of Meta before themselves. He wants to create a sense of responsibility for “collective success” and for Meta employees to see “each other as teammates”.
His final two core values are ‘Build Awesome Things’ and ‘Be Direct and Respect Your Colleagues’. Overall, these new values represent moving forward in grand yet respectful manners where the company inspires those both internally and externally.
