Skills, not jobs, are the currency of work in 2024 and beyond.
Research from the likes of Mercer, Cornerstone and LinkedIn is showing that skills-first organizations will be the ones that thrive in the future of work – but redesigning work around skills, rather than jobs, is much easier said than done.
Technology, and particularly AI is essential here – and this is where learning tech vendors come in.
Stepping up to support HR customers on their skills journey is Cornerstone OnDemand.
The learning tech giant has announced it is acquiring SkyHive Technologies for an undisclosed sum.
This comes just a few months after Cornerstone announced it was buying Talespin, an experiential reality learning platform.
The latest deal accelerates Cornerstone’s own labor market intelligence capabilities, and aims to enable its global customers, which include the likes of Samsung, DHL, Walgreens and Renault, to build more agile, future-ready workplaces.
Talking about the news, SkyHive’s co-founder Sean Hinton and Mohan Reddy noted: “For Cornerstone and SkyHive, our founding missions align and point towards a shared north star of educating and reskilling the world, so much so that it feels as though we were meant to come together.
“A skills-centric approach is the future, but adoption of this approach has not reached the mass of its potential to transform the world.
“Together with Cornerstone we’re excited to bring this to a wider audience and build upon this future jointly.”
The future of work and skills with Cornerstone
HR analyst and founder of Aptitude Research Madeline Laurano put it amazingly when she posted on LinkedIn:
While Lighthouse Research & Advisory’s Chief Research Officer Ben Eubanks added that this is “big news”. “This announcement has my brain spinning from all the possibilities”.
Writing on LinkedIn, he shared: “Cornerstone has been doing solid work in learning for enterprise companies… for quite some time.
“Now they get access to SkyHive’s labor market intelligence engine to see skills not just in learning and talent mobility but across the workforce (think movement of skills in the labor force more broadly).
“It brings skills to the forefront in an actionable and practical way.
“Plus, the SkyHive models get enriched by Cornerstone data from across millions of learners on content, training, skills, learner behaviors, and more.
“Can you say “rich data for training AI models?” he joked.
In an exclusive comment to UNLEASH, Cornerstone’s CEO Himanshu Palsule notes: “Today’s news reaffirms Cornerstone’s commitment to give organizations dynamic, comprehensive solutions so they can navigate the complexities of the modern workforce with agility and foresight.
Skills are the future. While some organizations are well on their way to becoming a skills-based organization, others don’t know where or how to start.
“We’re committed to meeting our customers where they are and supporting them on their journey, while continuing to innovate in anticipation of the dynamic changes organizations will face in the future.
“With terabytes of data that’s refreshed and refined daily, extensive labor market intelligence and an open architecture to integrate with our existing solutions, Cornerstone and SkyHive play a key role in forecasting emerging critical skills, helping organizations predict future needs.”
