Hiring is harder than ever – every company is trying to attract the best talent out there – and technology is a crucial part of the puzzle.
The question that remains is how do HR leaders ensure they aren’t just choosing “a shiny new tool”, and are choosing a HR tech partner (and product) that really helps drive success?
The HR leaders in the (virtual) room discussed some great tips and tricks here.
The first was for HR teams to be really clear on their requirements, and the problems they want to solve, with the technology.
“None of the technology is going to be perfect”, so HR leaders need to be clear on the non-negotiables and where they can compromise.
Doing a lot of research and having tech-savvy HR people involved here is an essential element – there was lots of nodding when one of the attendees made this point.
“What I see in the industry is a lot of vendors with a lot of money [that they] plow into marketing, not R&D” – so if you don’t have someone in the room with real deep data knowledge, “you’re going to get sold stuff that just will not work.”
Building on this conversation, the HR leaders shared the importance of really sitting down with vendors, talking about the product, and ensuring their tools can solve those problems.
“What is the vendor’s experience of having dealt with a business problem similar to this?”
The key here is seeing HR tech companies as partners, not just providers of technology.
There must be real chemistry and synergy between the teams – there may be ups and downs with the implementation, but if HR leaders and vendors can work as one team, you can “maximize the upside.”
Point solutions vs all in one tools
The discussion turned to talk about data connectivity challenges and the need for truly integrated talent solutions that prioritize candidate and recruiter experience.
Is the best way to do this to have lots of different, integrated point solutions or to have an all-in-one core HR tool?
One HR leader shared that sometimes these all-in-one systems “do everything and not anything” and can easily become unfit for purpose.
While this is a challenge, having all the data in one place is incredibly helpful when dealing with talent acquisition at scale – plus this approach avoids tech fatigue from HR and employees; it can be frustrating to have to keep switching tools.
The beauty is that you can always plug and play and integrate other tools into the core system, but, one of the HR leaders emphasized that the secret to success is ensuring “the overhead of integration is with the partners, not with you.”
Evidentially, the consolidation move is the route most HR leaders in the session are going down – they are building off their core systems, and thinking about what specialist providers they want to work with to “truly add value.
