Now that leading tech CEO’s expect smarter-than-human AGI to be 1-5 years away, it is timely to consider what types of AI we actually want. I describe how virtually all AI applications that people are most excited about (from new cures to safe autonomous vehicles, personalized education platforms, helpful robots and countless applications that make people, companies and nations prosper) can be built as safe and controllable tools. In other words, the much-hyped AGI (that we still haven’t figured out how to control) isn’t necessary for ushering in an AI golden age, and we can do even better.
