Few people in HR or recruiting would say hiring and talent acquisition has been easy in the 2020s.

The labor market has been persistently tight — in 2022 alone, according to federal data, 50 million people quit their jobs with people chasing remote work and better flexibility — and there are newly emphasized metrics HR must deliver against, such as diversity and inclusion.

Michael DeSimone was announced on 18 April, making the move from Shopkeep, a cloud-based point-of-sale system, where he served as chief business officer for two years.

Prior to Shopkeep, DeSimone was CEO of BorderFree, an e-commerce platform used by leading retailers. It’s a company he led from the startup phase to a publicly traded company that was eventually acquired in 2015.

Speaking on his appointment, DeSimone said: “I’m thrilled to be joining SmartRecruiters and to have the opportunity to work with a team that has already accomplished so much.

“As the world of work continues to evolve, talent acquisition has become an increasingly critical function for businesses of all sizes and SmartRecruiters is uniquely positioned to help companies hire the best talent.”

A SmartRecruiters statement added that DeSimone brings over 20 years of experience driving revenue growth, and expanding product portfolios — which talent acquisition and HR teams will likely be excited to hear about! — and building high-performing teams.

Jerome Ternynck, SmartRecruiters’ founder and chairman of the board, added that he was convinced that DeSimone was the right person to lead SmartRecruiters forward.

Ternynck stated: “Michael has an impressive track record of driving growth and building successful teams, and we believe he is the right person to lead SmartRecruiters into its next phase of growth.”

SmartRecruiters’ next moves

With an impressive 4,000 customers across 120 countries, SmartRecruiters already has an impressive market share.

Yet, that hasn’t stopped the San Francisco-headquartered firm from stating, with DeSimone at the helm, that they plan to continue rapid expansion and become the go-to platform for talent acquisition in the global marketplace.

With self-reported successes including improving client hiring velocity by 50% and boosting job applicant volume by 120%, as well as having a customer satisfaction score of 9.4/10, they certainly are showcasing credentials that give them the foundation to make good on the promises.
